This week I looked more into the U.S based groups that the Save The children organization sponsored. This program looks into Early Childhood development and the children who are from low income families and affected by poverty. This really resonates with me as a professional due to the fact that I work in an Early Childhood Program and have seen only a few families come trough that have been impacted by poverty while enrolled in my class. I could see myself getting involved with a program like this or this program. I would like to learn more about this program as more information comes to the website each week. I have signed up for the news letter and weekly emails from this organization. One of the pieces of information that really struck my interest is that 34 million people are affected by poverty in which 10% of that (3.4 million) are children. That is extremely high. This organization deal s with policies in Early Childhood and the poverty issues when it comes to money and getting back on track, and the health of the children are issues that are dealt with by politicians, economists , and neuroscientist. I understand that no matter the issue or trend being discussed can be taken from any of these point of views and can be influenced by these point of views.
I absolutely love Save the Children organization. 3.4 million children living in poverty is very sad. I enjoy reading articles about Save the Children because it gives you ways of donating, how to be a mentor, and fact sheets about all their sub units. This week I had the opportunity to learn that its so many children who are not literate. This is a problem that politicians tend to keep ignoring. Since reading this organization how have to contributed to the work of children.
ReplyDeleteSave the Children is long standing and incredible organization with so many valuable resouces. I agree with your commnet regarding the current political scene realted to chidlren, families and poverty. Politician's don't like to hang their hats on issues regarding poverty and children because the effects aren't in the short term. I am appalled at the government shut down this week and what this is doing to our country's premiere EC program for children living in poverty. Apporximately 70,0000 children from low income families were denied access to Head Start due the sequestration and now approximately another 19,000 are effected due to the shut down. Head Start programs with grant years starting 10/1/2013 are now not receiving funding! There will be another cadre coming due on 11/1/2013. Cudos to those who rallyed at the Capitol today on behalf of Head Start - was there anyone there to hear them? --- The State of Poverty - America's 51st state! ~Lisa
ReplyDeleteAren't the numbers staggering for child poverty? That is the one thing that has really opened my eyes during this course. The numbers of so many children right here in the US that are in poverty and hungry. I live in an area that does see hard times and several poverty-stricken families. Needless to say, I buy food every week for my snack times to ensure they get enough while at school.
