Wk2: Exploring Roles in the ECE Community

The three communities of practice I chose area:
1.     Prevent Child Abuse New York
2.     Early Care & Learning Council
3.     Professional Development Program: Rockefeller College University at Albany

The Prevent Child Abuse New York organization is a great tool for so many people. It brings together so many professions, families, and children. There are many ways for professions, families and children to work together to prevent child abuse. There are many organizations within this organization that need to collaborate and work together in efforts to combat child abuse.

The Early Care & Learning Council works with organizations to help families find and gain access to quality early childhood care throughout the community.  They not only work with early childhood education centers but many other professions in the community. They work with medical agencies to find families and children the right medical services to fit their needs (Early Care & Learning Council, 2012).

The last organization I chose was Professional Development Program that is through UAlbany. I have been part of this for many years. It is an organization where professionals can use the sources the program provides to enrich their professional development. The information and training the program provides comes from many sources early childhood professionals provide along with other practices’ knowledge to better the understanding of child development and early childhood practices. http://www.ecetp.pdp.albany.edu/

I chose these three due to the passion that bring out in me as an Early Childhood professional. These are local and state organization are great resources and companions to guide in professional development and work to create a bright and safe future for all children and their families.
Job opportunities:

Right now I am the Center Assistant Director and Lead Infant Teacher at the center I work at. It is a lot of time and energy on both jobs. I would like to see myself in a few months step into just the Assistant Director role. Also, this is a new facility.  I have also wondered about looking into an administration job with a company that is more advanced in their program development stage. I have been looking online to see what is around the area, not to necessarily leave my job I have now. Working for a YMCA or a center that wants a program curriculum developer or a liaison administration for professional development. Professional development is a passion of mine.

Many of the jobs that I would like to hold in the near future, experience is needed. I do need more experience in administration and supervisor roles. Communication skills are a necessity to communicate between staff, administration and other leaders to find the right professional development. Organizational skills to keep track of different organizations to work with. Being a resource and having professional communication relations with other fields and related organizations is a must.

  1. Samantha, you have chosen great organizations. Early intervention is so important for our young children. Research has shown that when young children receive early intervention, they receive the support for school readiness. This is definitely an area where community of practice is paramount.

Thanks for sharing a great blog.

  2. Samantha-
If your passion is professional development, start offering your services as a workshop presenter at local and state conferences, or even to local childcare programs. I assume most child care providers need continuing education, and if you are starting out, free or low cost is the way to go to get experience and name recognition. Good Luck to you!
